HARDWICKE PAPERS. Vol. DCCXXXIII. Legal treatises and collections, apparently collected by Sir Nicholas Lechmere, Baron of the Exchequer 1689-1700.
1. "A short introduction to the better understanding of the Exchequer," written temp. Jas. l., apparently by a Clerk of the Pipe, and relating entirely to the accompts of the auditors. It contains, nearly in the same words, the etymology of the "Pipe" mentioned at p. 42 (note) of the Pipe Roll Society's Introductory volume. Beg. "The Court of Exchequer is an ancient Court." f. 1.
2. "A Short Compendium or breife declaration of what every officer of His Majesties Court of Exchequer ought to doe by virtue of his office in England"; printed (London, 1658) as The Practice of the Exchequer Court, by Sir T. F., really by Thomas Fanshawe, Remembrancer of the Exchequer 1568-1601. Another copy is in Lansd. MS. 253, f. 493 (imperfect). At the end are appended some "orders concerneing sheriffes." f. 13.
3. "A Trea[t]ise or extracte of Recordes and meanes whereby Kings and Queenes of England have raised moneys, collected and comprized by Sir Robert Cotton, Knight and Barronet"; printed (London, 1642 ?) as An abstract out of the Records, etc. f. 42. Another copy is in Hargr. MS. 311, f. 62.
4. "The case of [Algernon Percy] the [10th] Earle of Northumberland touching a releife demaunded of him"; [temp. Chas. I.]. f. 55.

8. "The valuation of [the] severall lyvings of all the Bishoppricks in England, with the Tenth that everie one of them payeth" in 1591; followed by a valuation of the deaneries and a statement of the extent of the dioceses. f. 116. This and the next article are in one hand.
9. Genealogies, charters and lists of honours, etc., pertaining to the Dukes of Lancaster. Lechmere was Attorney-General of the Duchy under the Commonwealth. f. 120.
