HARDWICKE PAPERS. Vol. DCCXXXVIII. Constitutional Treatises, viz.:-
1. "Preparatory notes touching the Right of the Crown," by Sir Matthew Hale, Chief Justice of the King's Bench 1671-1676, slightly abridged by Sir Philip Yorke (1st Earl of Hardwicke), who copied it (see note, dated Sept. 1729, on f. 1) from an autograph MS. in the possession of Matthew Hale, the Chief Justice's grandson. Another MS. is in Lincoln's Inn Library. f. 1.
2. "An answer to the Case Stated concerning the jurisdiction of the House of Peers," by Francis North, 1st Baron Guilford, while Chief Justice of the Cummon Pleas (1675-1682), copied "from the hand of His Lordship's confident clerk Mr. Robert North" and given to Lord Hardwicke in 1762 by Francis, 1st Earl of Guilford, grandson of the Lord Keeper. The "Case Stated," to which it is an answer, is to be found in Harl. MS. 6810, f. 115, and another copy of the answer is in Hargr. MS. 299, f. 143. f. 22.
3. "A True State of the constitution of the Chief Justice of the King's Bench," by Sir John Holt, Chief Justice 1689-1710, with some notes by Sir William Lee, Chief Justice 1737-1754. f. 46. Paper; ff. 62. XVIIIth cent. 12 ¼ X 7 ½ in.
