ORIGINAL despatches, partly in cipher, from M. A. de Azevedo Coutinho to S. J. de Carvalho, Plenipotentiary at Vienna, to arrange differences between the Queen-Empress Maria Theresa, and Pope Benedict XIV.; 1744-1749; with copies of earlier correspondence between the Court of Vienna and other Goverments, and other papers. Among them are Carvalho's instructions, signed "Rey" [John V. of Portugal]; Lisbon, 14 Sept. 1744. Port. f. 2; Patent of plenipotentiary powers at Vienna, signed by the King, and countersigned by M. A. de Azevedo Coutinho; 18 Oct. 1746. Port. Vellum. With seal. f. 154 b; and French, Portuguese, and Prussian passports, the latter signed with the initial "F." by Frederic the Great, and countersigned by [Heinrich] C[omte] de Podewils, ff. 1, 99 b, 101. The latter part of the volume contains copies of Portuguese laws and edicts on the subject of ambassadorial immunities, etc.; 1748-1749; and on f. 277 b is a patent appointing Dom Antonio Rolim de Moura, Governor and Captain General of the States of Cuyabá and Mato-Grosso, to be Principal Commissioner for fixing the boundary line between the Spanish and Portuguese possessions in Brazil; 17 Aug. 1758. Signed "El Rey" [Joseph Emanuel], and countersigned by Dom Luis da Cunha, Minister of Foreign Affairs, etc. Port. Vellum. Paper and Vellum. Folio.
