"LIURO terceiro do Senhor Bispo [de Viseu] Dom Jorge de Ataide;" 1538-1581. The first portion consists principally of papers relating to testamentary bequests of Dom Jorge's grandmother, Dona Violante de Tavora, widow of Alvaro de Ataide, Senhor de Castanheira, including at f. 47 a paper signed by John III. of Portugal. The second portion consists of papers relating to Dom Jorge's election to the Bishopric of Viseu in 1569; reports of his visitations, signed by himself ; and other documents, signed by the King Sebastian, by his grandmother, Catherine of Austria, Regent in 1557-1562, and by the Cardinal Infante Henry, Regent in 1562-1569, and King of Portugal in 1578. Port., Span., and Lat. At f. 89 is an original letter in Italian dated 1598, signed and partly written by "Il cardinale [Camillo] Borghese" [afterwards Pope Paul V.], which is addressed to the Bishop as Capellão Mor under Philip II. of Spain.
