Vol. I (ff. 55). Correspondence of Adm. Collingwood with successive First Lords of the Admiralty:-
1. Ten letters to Collingwood from [Charles Middleton, 1st Baron] Barham, 1st Lord of the Admiralty, 6 Nov. 1805- 1 Mar. 1806. All, save the two on ff. 7, 23, are printed more or less fully from pressed copies in vol. iii of The Barham Papers by Sir J. K. Laughton (Navy Rec. Soc. xxxix, 1911). Included (f. 1) is also a duplicate letter from Barham to Nelson, 30 Oct. 1805. Lot 192. f. 3.
2. Ten letters to Collingwood from Thomas Grenville, 1st Lord of the Admiralty, 4 Oct. 1806-11 May 1807, mostly relating to the situation in Turkey. Included (f. 49) is the draft of a reply in Collingwood's hand, 6 June 1807. Lot 199. f. 25.
3. Letter to Collingwood from [Henry Phipps, 3rd Baron and (1812) 1st Earl] Mulgrave, 1st Lord of the Admiralty, 28 Feb. 1808, covering a letter (f. 54) to Mulgrave from [Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of] Elgin, 16 Feb. 1808, requesting official aid in transporting the Parthenon marbles from Greece. For the circumstances see the article by A. Hamilton Smith, "Lord Elgin and his Collection," in the Journal of Hellenic Studies, xxxvi (1916), p. 269. Lot 195. f. 51.
