Some passages have been cut out, as appears from the stubs of excised leaves at ff. 275, 283-298, 372-377. The most important are:-(1) Character of Charles James Fox, written, circ. 1807, by Sir P. Francis, followed on f. 34 by a copy of the same in the hand of Lady Francis. (3) Miscellaneous notes and extracts from books made by Sir P. Francis, mainly in 1763 (cf. f. 147), some rather later in date. Among the most important are:-(a) Various papers relating to commercial and diplomatic relations between England and Portugal. Included are copies of two treaties, the first (f. 206) of 23 June 1661, the second (f. 216) 16 May 1703. Lat. Other copies in Add. MSS. 20846, f. 191; 32787, f. 184. There are also copies of two letters by Francis on the state of the relations between England and Portugal, the first (f. 222) dated May 1766, the second (f. 239), n. d., addressed to Charles Lennox, 3rd Duke of Richmond; c f. Parkes, op. cit., i, pp. 119-121. f. 206;-(b) Names of various persons to be removed from the Civil Service, with notes of their successors, by Henry Fox, 1st Baron, Holland, circ.
