FRANCIS PAPERS. Vol. V (ff. i + 291). Miscellaneous papers of Sir P. Francis, including, letters and copies of diplomatic and political documents. The most noteworthy are:-
(1) A letter, "To the Frequenters of THEATRES," subscribed "An Enemy to Imposition," i.e. Sir P. Francis (cf. Parkes, op. cit., i, p. 68); 25 Jan. 1763. Printed. f. 3;-(2) Articles of the treaty between England and Portugal, [ 10 July 1654], in Portuguese, with the secret article (f. 17 b). Another copy in Latin and Engl. is in Stowe MS. 192. On. f. 15 b are six preliminary articles of a treaty between the same parties, dated 1652. f. 5;-(3) Copies of miscellaneous papers of Thomas Hay, 8th Earl of Kinnoull, British Ambassador at Lisbon 1760. The majority are despatches from Lisbon addressed to William Pitt [1st Earl of Chatham 1766]. The subjects mainly concern trade and the dismissal of Cardinal Felippo Acciaioli, the Papal Nuncio, from the Portuguese court. All are copied in the hand of Sir P. Francis, who was secretary to the Ambassador. f. 19;-(4) Copy of the Preliminary Articles, with the secret article, of the treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle between England, France and the United Provinces, 30 April 1748. Copy. f. 214;-(9) Correspondence of Maj.-General William Shirley, Governor of Massachusetts Bay 1741-1756, with Henry Fox [1st Baron Holland 1763], William Wildman Barrington, 2nd Viscount Barrington, Maj.-General Sir William Johnson, 1st Bart., Horatio Sharpe, Governor of Maryland, Robert Hunter Morris, Governor of New Jersey, Maj.-General James Abercrombie, Commander-in-Chief in N. America, and John Campbell, 4th Earl of Loudoun ; 9 Nov. 1755-5 Sept. 1756. Most of the letters are printed by C. H. Lincoln, Correspondence of William Shirley, 1912, ii, passim, where some of the letters have different addressees.
