Vol. 1. "The Unhappy Revenge": a play described. in a note (f. i) as a "Tragedy written by Algernon Charles Swinburne soon after he went to Eton (April 1849), at about 13 years old," and apparently referred to by him in a letter to Churton Collins, 11 Dec. 1876 (Gosse and Wise, Letters of A. C. S., i, p. 285) as composed after reading Tourneur's Revenger's Tragedy "at the ripe age of twelve." Swinburne states that he had burnt the play with other youthful compositions at the age of sixteen and that he had forgotten its "very name." The action takes place mainly at Rome in the reign of Maximus. Ends incompletely in Act IV, Sc. v (two pages of Sc. iv are also left blank). For a description of the play see G. Lafourcade, La Jeunesse de Swinburne (Publ. de la Faculté des Lettres de I'Univ. de Strasbourg, Fasc. 44), i, p. 97. Paper; ff. iii + 46. Sm. octavo. Circ. 1849. Written in a note-book formerly the property of "F[rancis] B[acon] Gregory, Evans', Eton" (f. 45 b, reversed), who died at Eton in 1850. Two school compositions, a copy of Greek iambics (f. 45, rev.), and a version in Latin elegiacs of a passage from Falconer's "Shipwreck " (f. 44 b, rev.), with comments by J[ames] L[eigh] J[oynes], Swinburne's tutor, are in Gregory's hand, not in Swinburne's as suggested by Lafourcade, op. cit., i, p. 91. Some rough sketches of heads (ff. 1, 2 b, 45 b, 46) are perhaps by Swinburne.
