Vol. II. Correspondence and papers, mainly of Nathaniel Bacon (kt. 1604, d. 1622) of Stiffkey, co. Norf., 2nd son of Sir Nicholas Bacon, Lord Keeper, and halfbrother of Sir Francis Bacon. He was twice Sheriff of Norfolk (1586 and 1599), and four times M.P. (thrice for Norfolk and once for King's Lynn). For further details see W. Rye, The False Pedigree of Bacon of Suffolk, 1919, p. 33, and H. W. Saunders, The Official Papers of Sir Nath. Bacon as Justice of the Peace, 1915. The papers came into possession of the Townshends through the marriage of his eldest daughter and co-heiress, Anne, with Sir John Townshend of Raynham. Some letters from Sir Nathaniel, drafts but not autogr., are included. Arranged as follows:-(1) Dated correspondence; 1573-1624. f. 1;-(2) Undated correspondence, in alphabetical order. f. 121;-

(3) Miscellaneous papers, including Norfolk wins and petitions; 1471-1676. f. 169. This section is headed by a letter of J[ohn Courtenay, 7th Earl of] Deuonshyre from Tiverton, 18 Apr.
