The memorial is minuted by the C[omité] des Finances (?), "R[eçu ?] le 31 Xbre No 907"; but Favras had been arrested for conspiracy on 24 Dec., and was hanged on 19 Feb. 1790. f. 80.

14. Order, dated 21 June 1791, reciting and requiring immediate promulgation of a decree made by the National Assembly in consequence of the flight of Louis XVI to Varennes during the previous night. Two certified copies (one addressed to the officers of the Dept. of Rhône et Loire), signed by M[arguerite] L[ouis] F[rançois] Duport [du Tertre, Minister of Justice]. 17. Memorandum in the hand of Louis Stanislas Xavier, Count of Provence, afterwards Louis XVIII, on a renewed project for the King's escape. The endorsement states that this paper was given to [Gustavus III], King of Sweden, by Monsieur during his stay at Aix-la-Chapelle, 5 July 1791. f. 127.
18. Order by [Étienne Jean] Panis, "administrateur provisoire du Dept. de Police & de la Garde Nale. [of Paris]," directing the Concierge of the Abbaye Prison to release the seven prison Gendarmes from their duties immediately "pour Les soustraire au Cours des Vengeances du peuple (qui dans sa fureur pourroit se meprendre & qu'on dit en ce moment accourir)." Dated 1792, this instruction was clearly issued in anticipation of the massacres which broke out on 2 Sept., and is evidence of the complicity of the authorities. f. 159.
19. Memorial by Barthélemi Louis Joseph Schérer protesting against his suspension from the appointment of Adjutant-General of the Army of the Rhine by the Représentants en mission. In defence of his conduct Schérer gives a detailed account of events around the lines of Weissenburg from 19 July to 23 Aug. 1793. f. 176.

Letter from Charles [Denis] Millard, Deputy for Saône-et-Loire in the National Convention, to the "Sans Culottes de la Société populaire de Châlon Sur Saône," attacking the Cordeliers' Club and other enemies of the Jacobins; 29 Ventose, an 2 [19 Mar. 1794]. After the collapse of the Terror the inhabitants of Chalon-sur-Saône denounced Millard as "un apologiste des assassinats journaliers de la guillotine révolutionnaire" (Anc.
