M. Letter from R[ichard] P[arkes] Bonington to J[ohn] Barnett, regarding Mrs. [Margaret] Carpenter's wish to exhibit at the Salon of 1827, with pen-and-ink sketch of a picture he was painting for her father-in-law, James Carpenter; 21 Oct. 1827. Another letter to Barnett (then in the possession of Messrs. Maggs), of [March] 1828, described with other papers of the artist by A. Dubuisson and C. E. Hughes, Richard Parkes Bonington, p. 81, contains a similar sketch with title "The Grand Canal with the Church of the Vergine del Salute, Venice." The finished picture was later sold at Christie's, 6 Apr. 1878 (op. cit., p. 196 ; cf. p. 158). Sotheby's sale-cat., 30 July 1924, lot 397. f. 110.
