LETTERS and reports relating to French military operations in Spain during the Peninsular War, 1808-1811, viz.:-
1. Letters from [Jean-Baptiste] Jourdan, Maréchal de France, Chief of Staff to King Joseph of Spain, to [Claude Victor Perrin, dit Victor], Due de Bellune, Maréchal de France [Commander-in-chief of the French Army in Spain]; 1808-1809. French. Signed (except f. 53, which is holograph). At f. 52 is a certified copy of a letter from Marshal Soult, an enclosure in Jourdan's of 2 Aug. 1809, which is now missing, but of which there is a typed translation in Add. MS. 41290, ff. 109-110. Tile letters relate mainly to the pursuit of Blake's army of Galicia after the battle of Zornosa, the battle of Espinosa (11 Nov. 1808), Victor's campaign in Estremadura, and the battle of Talavera (27, 28 July 1809). Extracts from one of them (f. 7) are printed by P. E. A. du Casse, Mémoires . . . du Roi Joseph, v, p. 294, and E. H. de Grouchy, Mémoires militaires du Maréchal Jourdan, p. 137, but other odd letters of the period from Jourdan to Victor printed therein are not in this collection. f. 1.
2. "Journal du siége d'Olivenza Commencé Le 11 Janvier 1811," followed (f. 70) by "Journal du Siége de Badajoz commencé le 26 Janvier 1811": a series of daily reports by [François Joseph Chaussegros de] Léry [Baron], Commandant en chef du génie, to [? Édouard Adolphe Casimir Joseph Mortier, Due de Trévise, Maréchal de France] during the sieges of Olivença (11-22 Jan. 1811) and Badajoz (26 Jan.-11 Mar. 1811). French. Signed. The earliest from Olivença (11-13 Jan.) are missing and there are none for 20-21 Jan., 21-22 Feb., or 7-8 Mar. The gist of the reports, with other matter, is given (probably from some secondary source) by J. B. Lamare, Relation, des séges et défenses de Badajoz, d'Olivença, etc., 1837, Cp. 7-82 ; cf. also J. V. Belmas, Journaux des siéges... dans la Péninsule, iii, 633-724. f. 63. Paper ; ff. 124. Folio. Sotheby's sale-cat., 30 Nov.-3 Dec. 1925, lots 1179 (art. 1) and 1356 (art. 2).
