- Title:
- Royalist correspondence, primarily addressed to Prince Rupert, 1643-1644
- Scope & Content:
-
This is the second volume of the 'Rupert Correspondence' - overwhelmingly letters received by Rupert, Prince and Count Palatine of the Rhine (1619-1682) in 1644 - which descended in the family of Rupert's secretary Thomas Bennett until they were purchased by the publisher Richard Bentley, who in turn sold them on to the British Museum in 1851-1853.
There are a few letters to other recipients which were presumably forwarded to Rupert either then (see ff. 33v, 185r-186v) or later, or which were silently added to the collection. The volume covers 1644, though one letter has certainly been misdated (from 1643) and a couple of other letters which are undated are from 1643 rather 1644.

- Custodial History:
-
Origin:
England; Wales; Ireland; Scotland.
Provenance:
Thomas Bennett (c. 1645-1688), of Shaftesbury, Dorset, secretary to Prince Rupert, 1678.
Letters descended in the Benett family until John Benett (1773-1852) of Pythouse, Wiltshire.
Bought by the publisher Richard Bentley (1794-1871), printer and publisher, for whom Eliot Warburton prepared Memoirs of Prince Rupert and the Cavaliers (1849), drawing heavily on these letters.
The collection was bought from Bentley by the British Museum at sales by Sotheby's (14 Apr 1851 and 15-20 June 1852) with further letters bought at a sale at Puttick and Simpson's, 25 Jan 1853. The date of sale and lot number are generally inscribed on the back of the letter; some letters have just a letter and lot number (e.g. B. Lot 465; W. Lot 490) and cannot be linked to a particular sale but are in the same hand as other sale details.
