This manuscript contains the Lume amoroso divinio, a collection of texts written in Italian, recounting the visions and discourses of Angela da Foligno (b. c. 1248, d. 1309), an Umbrian lay penitent, mystic and visionary. Accounts of Angela's experiences were compiled by her confessor, who subsequently translated them from her original Italian into Latin.
The accounts were transmitted in various Latin and back-translated Italian versions. This manuscript belonged to Thier and Calufetti's fifth family of Angela da Foligno manuscripts, which otherwise comprises two vernacular manuscripts: Perugia, Biblioteca Augusta, MS 1176 and MS 1200 (see Donovan, 'Lume Amoroso Divino' (2014), p. 190; Thier and Calufetti, Il libro (1985), pp. 51-73, 108-117). As Donovan notes, 'the defining features of this version are that the redactor divides the two parts (Memorial and Instructions) into thirty chapters or steps, uses the first person singular throughout, and skilfully and freely adapts and reorders the text, making of it in essence a spiritual autobiography' (Donovan, 'Lume Amoroso Divino' (2014), p. 190).
The two Perugia manuscripts were both copied at the Poor Clares convent of Monteluce in Perugia; MS 1176 contains the same tulip watermark as the British Library manuscript (Briquet No. 6658; Florence 1451, Lucca 1455-57). However, the British Library manuscript seems to be written in a different dialect from the two Perugia manuscripts, and Donovan thinks it possible that it was copied at the convent of San Jacopo di Ripoli in Florence (see Donovan, 'Lume Amoroso Divino' (2014), p. 193).
