PLANS and designs for the building and arming of ships, for maritime fortification, and for various implements and constructions for nautical purposes; in three books. Ital. Supplemented at f. 200 by a treatise "della palificata ò fondamenti della galera." Book I. wants five leaves at the beginning. In the titles of Books II. and III. they are stated to be the work "di me che sono Ritratto," in 1629, a portrait having originally been laid down in both places, but having subsequently been stripped off. The scale of measurement for the ships is calculated in English feet; and many of the vessels are said to be of English build. At f. 21 is "Il garbo del San Cosimo fatto dal Duca di Northumbria," and at f. 78 a similar plan, with the note, "fu fatto del Duca di Northumbria nel 1609 per il Gran Duca Cosimo;" referring to Robert Dudley, the repudiated son of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester., who assumed the title of Duke of Northumberland, and entered the service of Cosmo II. de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, and to whom the present work probably owes its origin. At f. 190 is the plan of the Presa de galeoni et molti caramussali et una germa della carouana di Alessandria fatta da 8 vascelli del Gran Duca di Toscana alli 21 di Ottobre 1608." Paper; XVIIth cent. Belonged to the Counts Borromei of Padua, 1689. Large Quarto.
