I. Miscellaneous letters and papers; circ. 1723 -1844, n.d. ff. 76-121b. Presented by Sir John Walter Hose. Included are:-(1) Pen and ink-wash drawing of a monument erected by George Tourville between Calais and Boulogne in memory of six persons (mostly English) murdered there in 1723; n.d. f. 80;-(2) Satirical lines entitled 'J.H. to Sr. Hans Sloane . . .'; [? circ. 1729]. Copy (18th cent.). Many copies of these lines exist, often with variants; some signed J.H. (e.g. Egerton MSS. 1717, ff. 54 -55; Add. MSS. 28101, ff. 70, 71, 28253, f. 26b), others C. H. (e.g. Harley MS. 7318, ff. 67b - 68b; Add. MS. 37684, ff. 25 - 26b ) or T.H. (e.g. Add. MS. 21544, f.27; An Epistolary Letter from T-H- to S H-s S-e, London, 1729).These lines have been diversely attributed to Sir Charles Hanbury Williams (Works, i, 1822, pp. 124 -129), Thomas Hearne (G. R. de Beer, Sir Hans Sloane and the British Museum, 1953, pp. 126 - 127) and Christopher Hilliard (Add. MS. 32463, ff. 122-123). ff. 81, 82;-(3) Letter from E. Turville to his uncle, Dr Robert Leyborn, Principal of St Alban Hall, Oxford, describing the recent earthquake in Lisbon; Belem, 19 Nov. 1755. Copy, imperfect. Turville is not named in a census of British subjects in Lisbon, made soon after the earthquake (A. R. Walford, 'The British community in Lisbon 1755', Tenth Annual Report and Review, Historical Association Lisbon Branch, 1946-1950, pp. 639-652). ff. 83 - 84b;-(4) Letter from Iacopo Morelli, Librarian of the Marciana at Venice, to Thomas Burgess, Bishop of St David's; 3 Aug. 1803. Latin. ff. 88-89b;-(5) Notes, etc., by Francis Halhed, of Wandsworth, New England, New South Wales, relating to Australia, especially concerning economic affairs and the aborigines, and (briefly) New Zealand; 1841-1843, n.d. ff. 103-121b.
