B. The martyrdom of St Bartholomew. On the verso is the traditional collect, according to Roman use, for the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin. From a collectar, another leaf from which, bearing a miniature of the crucifixion of a martyr and the collect for the Feast of St Francis of Assisi, is in the Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, Conn., U.S.A. (acc. no. 1920.1032, see photographs in MS. Facs. Suppl. ix, no. 90, 1-2). An early 19th cent. inscription on a cover preserved with the latter shows that the two leaves were at the time preserved together. Both the style of the miniatures and the formal humanistic script of the text are closely paralleled in Add. MS. 33733, at one time attributed to Giulio Clovio but more recently considered the work of a follower. Reproduced in J. W. Bradley, The Life and Works of G. Giulio Clovio, 1891, pl. 17. 154 x 194 mm. Third quarter of the 16th cent.
