PULESTON PAPERS. Vol. II. Commonplace and Memorandum Book; circ. 1564-1569. Latin and English. Hist. MSS. Comm., 2nd Report, App., p. 66. The principal contents are:-
(1) Account of theological disputations held in the presence of Queen Elizabeth I at Cambridge; 9 Aug. 1564. Printed from other MSS. by J. Nichols, Progresses of Queen Elizabeth, iii, pp. 106-129. ff. 16-22b.
(2) 'Collegii Balliolensis liber; in adventum sereniss. regine Elizabethae-oratio gratulatoria Thomae Coventrie socii eiusdem Collegii'; [1566]. Not included in the collection of addresses presented to Elizabeth I on the occasion of this visit to Oxford in Royal MS. 12 A. xlvii, printed by Nichols, ibid., i, p. 3, sqq. Thomas Coventry (b. 1547), knt. and Justice of C.P. 1606, was elected a Fellow of Balliol College in 1566. ff. 23-23b.
(3) Five poems by Pietro Bizzarri (born 1525), the Italian historian and poet, Prebendary of Salisbury 1567, addressed to his patron Francis Russell, 2nd Earl of Bedford, and others. The first two and the fourth are included in Bizzarri's Varia Opuscula, Venice, 1565. The third is addressed to William Drury, and the last 'Ad Petrum Bostocum Tremanorum mortem deplorantem' (i.e. Nicholas and Andrew Tremayne, twin brothers, killed at the battle of Newhaven 1564). For Bostock see further below. ff. 33-34. Paper; ff. iii+49 (ff. 4-9, 13-15, 24-29, 31-32, 35-40 are blank leaves). Small quarto. Contemporary limp vellum cover, into the front fold of which was inserted, on a loose sheet of vellum now bound as f.i, a decoratively pendrawn compass-rose inscribed 'Isangratius English fecit 1569'. The name 'Petrus Bostochus' (cf. art. 3 above) written as owner (?) on f. 1.
