F. Inventory of Egyptian antiquities in the possession of the French authorities at Alexandria, certified by Jean Baptiste Joseph Fourier, Secretary of the Institut d'Égypte; circ. 1801. French. The fifteen monumental items here listed, no. 8 being the Rosetta Stone, were surrendered to the British forces at Alexandria under Article 16 of the capitulation, 31 Aug. 1801, and presented by George III in 1802 to the British Museum, where they now form part of the collections of the Department of Egyptian Antiquities, with the exception of item 7. The present list is evidently that handed over to Colonel Tomkyns Hilgrove Turner by Fourier's deputy, Jean Baptiste Lepètre (cf. Archaeologia, xvi, 1812, pp. 212-214). A copy of the present list by Colonel Turner, with details of three additional items (cf. the rough notes on f. 13b) is preserved in the archives of the Department of Egyptian Antiquities ('Early Papers (Salt and Sams Collections)', f. 1). In addition to the antiquities, the present inventory lists a case of Oriental MSS., which were presented to the Museum by Colonel Turner, circ. 1802 (Department of Oriental Manuscripts and Printed Books, Add.
