G. Sonnet, beg. 'La ville qui receut vostre sainte naissance', addressed to the poet, Scévole de Sainte-Marthe, by Claude Binet, the biographer of Ronsard; after 1569. French. Autograph? Published, with an introduction, by E. H. W. Meyerstein, 'A Link with the Pléiade', French Studies, ii, 1948, pp. 156-157. Another piece of verse, in Latin, addressed to Sainte-Marthe by Binet, and written in a similar hand is Paris, Bibl. Nat. MS. Nouv. acq. fr. 14823, f. 11. Three letters of Binet to Sainte-Marthe are in Paris, Bibliothèque de l'Institut de France, MS. 290, ff. 36, 39, 41; the third of these is in a hand closely resembling that of the present sonnet.
