Viz.:-(1) Three separate movements for string quartet, all imperfect at the end, in E minor, C (Andante non troppo) and C (Allegro ma non troppo) headed 'Hildebrand Quartett', a reference to the Hildebrand family of Venice (C. St John, pp. 38-39). ff. 1-10;-(2) Largo and Andante religioso (cf. f. 27 below for the fugue subject) in B minor for string quintet, headed 'II'; circ. 1882-1884 (Florentine paper). ff. 11-14b;-(3) 'Short and Solemn Interludes for Sectional Orchestra'; four 'Variations on Old Choral Melodies' for strings (except no. 3 for brass), viz. 'O Traurigkeit, O Herzeleid', 'Du O schönes Weitgebäude', 'Erschienen ist der herrlich Tag' (cf. Add. MS. 46861, ff. 18-19b), 'Schwing dich auf zu deinem Gott' (cf. Add. MS. 46863, f. 31). Together with organ versions of nos. 1, 2, and 4 (published as nos. Va, I and III of Short Choral Preludes, Novello, 1913).
