EGMONT PAPERS. Vol. CLXVII (ff. v+50). Egmont MS. 249. Sir William Petty, 'Political Arithmetic', aft. March 1680 (?). Copy, made from Add. MS. 21128, ff. 2-37, with the original dedication to Charles II, and incorporating Petty's corrections in that manuscript, which is in the hand of Philip Madoxe, and formerly belonged to Petty's cousin, the 2nd Lord Egmont's uncle, Sir Robert Southwell. Petty recorded that in March 1680 he corrected a copy of this work in Sir Robert Southwell's hand; this is in a letter to John Aubrey, 12 July 1680, now Bodleian MS. Aubrey 11, f. 101, printed, with the omission, however, of '1680' by Lord E. Fitzmaurice, The Life of Sir William Petty 1623-1687, 1895, pp. 261-262. The 'Political Arithmetic' first appeared in a pirated edition in 1683, but authorised editions, with a new dedication by Petty's son, Lord Shelburne, did not appear till 1690 and 1691. See Sir G. L. Keynes, A Bibliography of Sir William Petty, F.R.S., 1971, pp. 21-22, 31-33. The 1690 text is collated with Add. MS. 21128, ff. 2-37, and with another MS. dated 1671, also corrected by Petty (Bodleian MS. Rawlinson D. 25) by C. H. Hull, The Economic Writings of Sir William Petty, i, 1899, pp. 232-313, in the introduction to which, on pp. 236, 238, Petty's letter to Aubrey is wrongly assigned to 1681 (see plate facing title, vol. i) and the dedication to Charles II conjecturally assigned, without reason stated, to the summer of 1683. Another, inferior, text of the 'Political Arithmetic' is now Sloane MS. 2572; five further texts are noted by Hull, including Trinity College, Dublin, MS. E2:20. Petty himself dated the 'Political Arithmetic' to 1671 (list printed by Fitzmaurice, op. cit., p. 318) and alluded to it in a letter to Lord Anglesey, 17 Dec. 1672, printed by Fitzmaurice, op. cit., pp. 157-158. Bookplates of the 1st Lord Egmont, 1702 (ff. ii, iv). Brown calf binding, blind-tooled.
