EGMONT PAPERS. Vol. CCLII (ff. vi+6). Egmont MS. 197. Roll of arms with the title (on the original back cover, f. vi), 'The Armes of ye Gentry of Devonshire and Cornewell in the time of Henry the sixth', and (in another hand) 'called Joseph Hollands Roll'; 15th- 16th cent. A collection of painted shields with names over (4 rows of 5 shields to a page) in two sections:-(1) 107 shields of Devonshire nobility, religious houses, and families (four shields torn away). ff. 1-3b;-(2) 86 shields of Cornish families (one shield torn away). ff. 4-6. The shields derive from the Devon and Cornwall sections of the roll of arms known as Ballard's Book, circ. 1465-1490 (College of Arms MS. M.3 'Tiltinge', ff. 75b-78, 88-92b); see A. R. Wagner, A Catalogue of English Mediaeval Rolls of Arms, 1950, pp. 115-116, where the present MS. is described and listed as copy C of Ballard's roll, and the same author's Heralds and Heraldry in the Middle Ages, 2nd edn. 1956, pp. 107-109. Various arms in Harley MS. 5871, ff. 45-73b, superscribed 'Joseph Holland 1579' (f. 45) include beneath the arms of 'Devenshire' (f. 48), and 'Archdeakon' (f. 53), references to 'my olde booke of Cornwell', and 'my old bo: of Devon', evidently the present MS. where these arms appear as the 77th coat of the Cornwall section (f. 5b) and the 68th coat of the Devon section (f. 2b). Paper (watermark: an anchor, similar to Briquet, Les Filigranes, nos.
356-360). 295 mm.× 380 mm. XV-XVI cent. The hand used is similar to hands employed in MSS. from the collections of Thomas Wriothesley, Garter King of Arms 1505-1534 (see, for example, Add. MSS. 45131-45133). Belonged to Joseph Holand, the Devonshire antiquary and member of the Elizabethan Society of Antiquaries (see George H. Viner, 'Joseph Holand', Ex-Libris Journal, xvi, 1906, pp. 102-105). Completions and corrections appear throughout in Holand's hand, and at f. v an autograph note bearing his signature records his being shown on 27 Sept. 1589 a further copy of the same MS. (not now known); see Wagner, Heralds and Heraldry, p. 109, and Catalogue of Medieval Rolls of Arms, p.115, where the note is printed, together with a further note (?autograph, calligraphically written), concerning the supposed origins of the arms, over Holland's name and the date 'l 584' (f.v). Offered for sale as lot 39 (label now f. ii) among heraldic and genealogical collections of Sir Henry St. George the younger, in two catalogues issued 1738-1739 by Thomas Osborne the bookseller (see above); notes in Sir Henry's hand appear at f. iv. Numbered '63' at f. iv, and '18' on the spine and back cover (f. vi).
