EGMONT PAPERS. Vol. CCLIII. Egmont MS. 231. Entry-book of the Court of Castle Chamber (or Star Chamber) in Dublin, containing orders or decrees of the court and statements of the cases to which they refer; circ. 1573-1620. Described and calendared in Hist. MSS. Comm. (series 63), Report on the Manuscripts of the Earl of Egmont, i, 1905, pp. lxvi-lxxi, 1-60; for the history of the court see also H. Wood, Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy, xxxii, 1914, pp. 152-170. A volume in Trinity College Library entitled 'Star Chamber Tryals' (Trin. Coll. MS.G.3. 1; T. K. Abbott, Cat. of MSS. in the Library of Trinity College, Dublin, 1900, no. 852), contains 17th century transcripts of many decrees in the present MS. with further material to 1630, cf. H. Wood, op. cit., p. 169, and Calendar of State Papers, Ireland, 1603-1606, pp. 348-349, 353-354, 391-392, where decrees for 22 Nov. 1605-29 Jan. 1606 (ff. 137-142b in the present MS.) are printed from these transcripts. Decrees are signed by the Lord Deputy and officers of the court, regularly until the beginning of the Easter Term, 1582 (f. 54), and occasionally in later entries; the names of these signatories are given in the Index to the present Catalogue. See also Brit. Mus. Quart., xvi, 1951-1952, p. 63. Paper and (f. 286) vellum; ff. iv+286. 300 mm.×200 mm. Circ. 1573-1620 (first dated entry, 4 Nov. 1573, at f. 26 [f. 2 blank]). Original pagination, indicating several leaves wanting at the beginning (beg. with p. 15), these leaves apparently missing at least since 1738-1739, when the MS. appeared in the Osborne sales of St. George MSS. (see above) as item 44 (label f. ii), and the number '71' and pencilled price '£5.5.0' were entered on the present f. 1 (cf. similar markings in other MSS. from these sales, Add. MSS. 47171, 47180; Harley MSS. 6082, 6148, 6213, 6238, 6250, 6589, 6591, 6592; Lansdowne MSS. 259, 762, 855, 858, 860A, 862). Miscellaneous memoranda, notes of debts, etc., in Dublin, occur in later hands at ff. 144b, 158b, 190, 205, 237b, 282b (dated 14 May 1660), 284b-285, and at f. 239b a copy of a letter of recommendation, 27 Jan. 1660/1 , by George Monck, 1st Duke of Albemarle (Lord Lieutenant of Ireland 1660-1661; d. 1670), for 'Capt. Jacob Knolles', whose name also appears, erased, in the upper margin of f. 148. Contemporary vellum binding; the back cover was originally strengthened by a vellum leaf from a 13th cent. collection of medical recipes, written in one column with blue and red initials (now f. 286). Correspondence, 18, 25 Nov. 1898, of Mrs Sophie C. Lomas, editor of the H.M.C. calendar of the MS. (see above), with J. J. Cartwright of the Public Record Office, Assistant Sec. of the Historical Manuscripts Commission, inserted at the beginning (ff. iii-ivb).
