(1) Literary MSS., etc., of Lord Broughton. Mostly autograph. ff. 1-157. (a) Political pamphlet in the form of a letter to George Canning; circ. 12 Apr. 1818. Copy, with autograph corrections. An earlier Letter to George Canning (see Recollections of a Long Life, edited by Charlotte, Lady Dorchester, ii, p. 114) had provoked a response to which Lord Broughton had published a short reply (see Lady A. Hamilton, Secret History of the Court of England, 1903, ii, pp. 248-262, for all three letters). The present MS. is a longer unpublished reply (see Add. MS. 47235, ff. 12, 13). ff. 1-18;-(b) Note of events, including a Cabinet meeting, on Lord Broughton's birthday, 27 June 1835: evidently used for the privately printed Recollections [or Some Account] of a Long Life, with an extract from which, in the published Recollections of a Long Life, v, pp. 39-40, it partly agrees. ff. 19, 20:-(c) Contemporary diary of events relating to Lord John Russell's attempt to form a government after Sir Robert Peel's resignation; 16-20 Dec. 1845. ff. 21-41 b;-(d) Memorandum on the Press; watermark 1854. ff. 43-46;-(e) Unpublished account of the resignation of Lord Aberdeen and the early activities of the succeeding Palmerston administration; composed Aug.-Oct. 1855 (see Add. MS. 43759, ff. 30-42 passim). ff. 47-126;-(f) MSS. apparently of the privately printed Recollections, 1865. ff. 127-157. Included are:-(i) the beginning, covering the years 1786-1804: evidently (see f. 144) an early draft composed circ. 1861. ff. 127-150;-(ii) a fragment relating to the period 1-16 Oct. 1834, showing some agreement with the extract in the published Recollections of a Long Life, v, pp. 16-21. ff. 153-157.
(2) Correspondence of Lord Broughton's eldest daughter Charlotte, and her husband, Dudley Wilmot Carleton, 4th Baron Dorchester 1875, mainly relating to the Broughton Papers; 1869-1885. The chief correspondents are Abraham Hayward, Q.C., 1869 (ff. 158-167 b), who used some of the papers for his article 'The Byron Mystery' in the Quarterly Review, cxxvii, 1869, pp. 400-444, and Henry E. Carlisle, editor of Hayward's correspondence, 1885 (ff. 181-193). ff. 158-193.
