LIEVEN PAPERS. Vol. XCVI (ff. 35). Two narratives by Prince Lieven, 'Journal de mes voiages en 1793 du 15/26 d'avril' and 'Journal de la campagne de 1794', the latter covering only the period 23 April-8 May, followed (ff. 14-35) by memoranda, mostly French, apparently used in the composition of the preceding journals but providing a record of Lieven's subsequent travels and experiences during 1794. Lieven, together with Count Aleksandr Mihailovich Rimsky-Korsakov, accompanied the Comte d'Artois, afterwards King Charles X of France, from St. Petersburg to England in 1793. After the Comte had decided not to continue his visit to England, they travelled with him from Hull back to the continent. After a short stay in Holland they arrived in London on 26 June and remained in England until 23 April 1794. Going next to Belgium, they joined the Austrian army at Cateau-Cambrésis and saw action against the French during May and June 1794. Early in July they left the Austrian army, travelling by way of Aix-la-Chapelle, Cologne and Dusseldorf to Amsterdam, and thence through Germany to Vienna, which they reached on 12 August. Lieven appears to have returned to St. Petersburg on 17 October.
