HOLKHAM MSS. Vol. IV (formerly MS. 70). SELLYNG'S CHRYSOSTOM and two tracts defending the church's possessions against the state, copied from Add. MS. 15673, and in the same hand as ff. 2-76b of the latter MS.; after 1503 (arms of William Warham, Archbishop of Canterbury 1503-1532, f. 2). Latin. Contents list, f. lb, similar but not identical to that in Add. 15673. See J. B. Trapp, 'Notes on manuscripts written by Peter Meghen', The Book Collector, xxiv, 1975, pp. 80-96. Contents:-
(1) John Chrysostom, Homily, De Statuis, V (Migne, Patr. Gr., xlix, cols.
67-82), translated into Latin in 1488 by William Sellyng, Prior of Christ Church, Canterbury. For Sellyng see R. Weiss, Humanism in England, 3rd ed., 1967, pp. 153-159. The Latin text omits (f. llb) '´ó (Migne, col. 72, line 56-col. 73, line 36). The translation shows a few simplifications and expansions, some of which may reflect the Greek text of the manuscript used by Sellyng. The present MS. shares a number of errors with Add. 15673, e.g. (f. 26) 'communicantes sultantes' corrected in the present MS. to 'comminantes et consultantes'. Beg. 'Non mediocrem existimo'. Colophon: 'Finit sermo quidam sancti Chrisostomi quam pulcherrimus quem e Greco in Latinum traduxit Reuerendus in Christo pater Willelmus Sellyng Prior ecclesie christi Cantuarensis Sacre pagine professor Anno domini 1488.' ff. 2-28.
(2) Speculum Regis Edwardi Tercii, attributed to Simon Islip, Archbishop of Canterbury 1349-1363. Printed in J. Moisant, De Speculo Regis Edwardi III, 1891. This MS. belongs to Moisant's B recension, with Bodleian Library, MSS. Bodl. 624 and Rawlinson C 606; Harley MSS. 2399 and 6237 (the latter copied from the present MS. in 1728) and Add. MS. 15673. J. Tait, 'On the date and authorship of the "Speculum Regis Edwardi"', English Historical Review, xvi, 1901, pp. 110-115, has shown that recension A is to be dated circ. 1330-1331, and recension B a few months later, and that Islip could not have been the author. Beg. 'O domine mi rex circa salutem anime tue'. ff. 28b-80.
(3) Celsus Maffeus, Dissuasoria ne Christiani principes ecclesiasticos usurpent census, with the prefatory letters of Domizio Calderino of Verona and Ermolao Barbaro, Bishop of Verona (cf. Add. 15673), the latter dated 31 Jan. 1471. Printed at Bologna, 1494; Verona, 1503. Beg. 'Solent complures sepenumero'. ff. 80b- 118. Vellum; ff. v+118. After 1503. Written and decorated in England in a Gothic hand with humanist influence. 230 mm.xl40 mm. (trimmed); textspace 150 mm.x75 mm. One column of nineteen lines. Ruled in red ink. Gatherings of eight (xv (last )6), with an extra leaf on either i or ii. Catchwords at the end of each gathering, many trimmed. Illuminated border, f. 2, (closely resembling that in Bodleian Library, MS. Barlow 14), with an illuminated initial 'N' enclosing the arms of William Warham as Archbishop of Canterbury 1503-1532. Elaborate four-line initials in gold, red, blue and green on ff. 28b, 80b, 81, 82b, 85; simpler two-line initials in the same colours on ff. 29, 31, 33b, etc. There is some damage from fungal attack.
