HOLKHAM MSS. Vol. VI (formerly MS. 246). CHARTULARY OF THE AUGUSTINIAN ABBEY OF KENILWORTH, Co. Warw. (founded circ. 1125); 16th cent. (after 27 July 1514). Latin and occasionally French and English. Contains copies, mostly abbreviated, of royal, papal, episcopal and private charters, 12th cent.-27 July 1514 (f. 66b), arranged mainly topographically, but with some papal and episcopal charters grouped together at ff. 93b-109, and some royal charters at ff. 367b-370. Contemporary alphabetical index of contents, ff. 1-3b; entries in a later hand, ff. 1, 2, refer to a 'registrum domini Willelmi Wall. abbatis' (Abbot 1516-1537). The MS. appears to include all the charters in Harley MS. 3650, a composite MS. containing portions of more than one Kenilworth chartulary, 12th-13th cent. Hist. MSS. Comm., 9th Report, ii, App., 1884, p. 361. G. R. C. Davis, Medieval Cartularies, 1958, no. 502 (other untraced registers, ibid., nos. 503-505). Vellum; ff. iii+370. 290 mm. X200 mm. XVI cent. Gatherings mostly of sixteen leaves lettered in the bottom right hand corner, but most letters removed by cropping (i6 , 6 cancelled; viii8 ; x18 , 18 cancelled; xii12; xiii18, 1 cancelled; xv 18, 17 cancelled; xxi18 , 1 cancelled; xxiv18, lacks 12; xxv4); xiv (ff. 188-203) is misbound and should follow xviii (ff. 253-268). Ff. 368-369 are bound in reverse order. A contemporary roman foliation, i-ccclxii (lacking cccl, after f. 360), is on rectos and versos of ff. 6-370. Written in single columns with bold initial words, occasional penwork flourishes and bold running headings. 19th cent. calf binding with the gilt ostrich stamp of the Coke family and bookplate (f. i) of Thomas William Coke, 1st Earl of Leicester of Holkham 1837 (signature, f. lib). Belonged to Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester (d. 1588) and, in 1596, to his wife's second husband, Sir Christopher Blount (d. 1600), see extracts from the MS. among Lord Aylesford's records at Packington (G. R. C. Davis, loc. cit.). The MS. afterwards belonged to the Coke family, Earls of Leicester, but it is not listed in the catalogue of Sir Edward Coke's library (ed. W. O. Hassall, Yale Law Library Publications, no. 12, 1950).
