GUSTAV HOLST COLLECTION. Vol. XXIII (ff. 55). 'Phantastes', Suite in F for orchestra, numbered op. 29, no. 2, on f. 2, but the work was withdrawn by the composer after its first performance and this opus number was given to the St Paul's Suite; [1911]. Full score. Autograph. Musical dedication to 'ff' [Frank Forty] on f. 1. The suite consists of Prelude, March, Sleep and Dance; the texts quoted at the opening of each movement consist of quotations from George Macdonald's Phantastes (f. 3) and Lewis Carroll's 'Jabberwocky' (f. 21), 'I didn't dream this time' (f. 32), quotation from Samuel Foote's nonsense poem on the Great Panjandrum and one of Beethoven's annotations to the Pastoral symphony (f. 41).
