MEYERSTEIN BEQUEST. Vol. VII (ff. 16+v). Symphony no. 40, in F major, for oboes, horns and strings, in score, by Franz Joseph Haydn; 1763. Autograph. With the composer's annotations (f. 1), 'Synfonia', 'ln Nomine Domini', 'Giuseppe Haydn 763' and (f. 15) at the end of the Finale, 'Laus Deo'. 'No. 7' in a different, contemporary hand on f. 1. See A. von Hoboken, Joseph Haydn, Thematisch-bibliographisches Werkverzeichnis, Mainz, i, 1957, 1:40. The edition in the Gesamtausgabe, Breitkopf and Härtel, 1909, Series I, iii, no. 40, was based on a manuscript copy of a score owned by Otto Jahn and the orchestral parts in the Eszterhazy archive, and includes a bassoon part not found in the present autograph. Paper. Circ. 325 mm. × 230 mm. (ff. 1-4b); circ. 330 mm.× 220 mm. (ff. 5- 10); circ. 335 mm.×230 mm. (ff. 11-16). A.D. 1763. Two former covers at ff. i-iii, the second bearing the title, 'Sinfonia Pastorale' (f. ii) in a 19th cent. hand. Belonged to Mrs Stirling of Kippendavie (possibly a member of the same family as Jane Stirling, friend of Chopin) and John Grant, Ltd., of Edinburgh (cat., Nov. 1936, cf. ff. iv, v, and information from John Grant, Ltd.), from whom Meyerstein obtained the manuscript. Possibly belonged, 19th cent., to J. Z. Herrmann (al. Jakob Zeugheer, cf. f. iv).
