(1) Fragment (ff. 2-2b), 50 mm. × 295 mm., cut from the top of one leaf, containing miscellaneous sketches. On the recto are three bars in G marked 'Andante molto mote' and four bars in E flat (?) marked 'overtur violoncello'; on the verso is a sketch possibly for the finale of the first Razumovsky quartet, op. 59, no. 1 (cf. notes by E. H. W. Meyerstein on ff. 1, 2b). Modern pencil transcript at f. 3. The fragment was no. 57 (previously 67) in an unidentified dealer's catalogue. ff. 1-3.
(2) 'Lied [overwritten 'Gesang'] aus der Ferne', Beethoven's second setting for voice and piano of a poem by Christian Ludwig Reissig; 1809. See G. Kinsky and H. Halm, Das Werk Beethovens: Thematisch-bibliographisches Verzeichnis, Munich, 1955, WoO 137. Seven oblong leaves (ff. 5-11), 230 mm. × 315 mm. Published by Breitkopf and Härtel, Leipzig, in February 1810 as Lied aus der Ferne and also included as no. 1 in the Artaria collection of July 1810, Achtzehn deutsche Gedichte, Vienna (see Kinsky- Halm, op. cit., for Beethoven's reaction to the Artaria publication). Annotations on the cover (f. 4), 'Lied aus der Ferne gestochen', 'No. 27', 'Paquet 4' (in pencil) and the name 'Artaria' written in pencil on f. 5 may relate to the ownership of the present manuscript by Artaria and Co., whose property it was declared to be in September 1827 after Beethoven's death (cf. Kinsky-Halm, op. cit.). Belonged to Mrs Stirling of Kippendavie and John Grant, Ltd., of Edinburgh (cf. Vol. VII above). ff. 4-1 1.
3) Sketch of 'Der Liebende', setting for voice and piano of a poem by Christian Ludwig Reissig; 1809. See Kinsky-Halm, op. cit., WoO 139. One bifolium (ff. 13-14b), 225 mm. ×300 mm., the first recto marked in red pencil 'Skizzen', the remaining three pages containing a draft of the song, incomplete at the end. Early 19th cent. copy of the song at ff. 15-17. Published as no. 6 in Artaria's collection, Achtzehn deutsche Gedichte, Vienna, 1810.
