MEYERSTEIN BEQUEST. Vol. XX (ff. 44). Miscellaneous music, partly autograph:-
(1) 'Macbeth': late 18th cent. copies of the instrumental parts (first and second violins, viola, and bass) in The Original Songs, Airs and Chorusses ... in ... Macbeth, revised and corrected by William Boyce, Longman and Broderip, [ 1780?]. Pencil annotations passim in the same hand as annotations in a copy of The Original Songs formerly in the Meyerstein collection (now Department of Printed Books, G.149.a). The manuscript parts do not include the Furies' Dance or the Witches' Dance. One bass part and two imperfect voice parts in slightly later hands are at ff. 16-19. ff. 1-19.
(2) 'Canone Finito, à 3, per giusti intervalli. Composto per 2 Violini, e Viola, da Muzio Clementi, pel suo amico Cherubini'; Paris, 7 Oct. 1821. Autograph. Score. Three leaves (ff. 20-23), 230 mm.×190 mm. Paginated 180-187. Formerly no. 25 in the Catalogue de la Collection Cherubini, Paris, 1878 (f. 24). Pencil no. '46' on ff. 20b, 23b, 24. ff. 20-24.
(3) Sketch for 'La Chute de la Maison Usher', the uncompleted opera based on the tale by Edgar Allan Poe by Claude Achille Debussy. Autograph. One leaf (f. 25), 265 mm.×210 mm., containing on the recto twenty-four bars of music written mainly in ink, with words and directions in pencil. At the foot a note of presentation signed 'E.C.D.' (Emma Claude Debussy, wife of the composer) to Marcelle Meyer, the pianist. Sotheby's sale-cat., 24-25 June 1940, lot 465; Quaritch cat., no. 578 (1940), item 279 (f. 27b). ff. 25-28.
(4) Allegro moderato in C, movement in sonata form for keyboard by Giuseppe Jozzi, who is described (f. 29) as 'Musico della Real Capp[ell]a Di S[ua] M[aestà] F[edelissi]ma'. Four leaves (ff. 29-32b), 120 mm.×160 mm. Not included in VIII Sonate per Cembalo, op. 1, Da Giuseppe Jozzi, Amsterdam, [1761], or A Collection of Lessons for the Harpsichord compos'd by Sig' Jozzi . . ., Books I-III, London [1761-1762]. ff. 29-32b.
(5) Passage in full score for orchestra, possibly a sketch for 'Horatius Coclès', 1794, by Étienne Henri Méhul; late 18th cent. Autograph. One leaf (ff. 34-34b), 335 mm. ×250 mm., containing twenty-one bars of music ending with a double bar, and a note by the composer beg. 'Reprenez de ce Signe . . .'. Formerly no. 79 in the Catalogue de la Collection Cherubini, 1878. ff. 33-34.
(6) '17 Variations sérieuses pour le Piano composées par Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, op. 54'; 1841. Autograph. Six leaves (ff. 37-42b), 300 mm. ×225 mm., together with the original covers (ff. 35, 36) bearing the title in Mendelssohn's hand. The annotations in red pencil throughout refer to the ends of lines and pages in the edition by Mechetti, Vienna, 1841. A letter (f. 43) to Paul [Mendelssohn-Bartholdy?, the composer's son], Leipzig, 29 May 1872, relates to the present manuscript. ff. 35-44.
