- Title:
- MEYERSTEIN BEQUEST. Vol. XXV (ff. iii+ 117). William Wordsworth''s Poems, in Two Volumes, 1807: the printer''s manuscript, conveyed in packets from Coleorton to the publishers Longman, Hurst, Rees and Orme between 14 Nov. 1806 (postmark on f. 2b) and circ. early Apr. 1807. Partly autograph, with revisions and annotations throughout by the poet.
- Scope & Content:
- © Dove Cottage - Wordsworth Trust.
Most of the texts are revised from an earlier collection of shorter poems transcribed circ. Jan.- Mar. 1806 by Dorothy Wordsworth and Sara Hutchinson, of which sixtyeight octavo leaves or fragments of leaves survive here. Poems from the same and other sources were retranscribed by Sara, circ. Nov.-Dec. 1806, while the rest, mostly of later composition, were copied by Wordsworth himself and his wife Mary, circ. Aug. 1806-Apr. 1807. A single stanza and some numbering was added to the ''Ode to Duty'' (ff. 10b, 14) in the hand of S. T. Coleridge, circ. late Dec. 1806. Of the pieces that were published in 1807 only the text of ''Lady! the songs of Spring were in the grove'', printed as number 17 of the ''Miscellaneous Sonnets'' to replace ''Pelion and Ossa flourish side by side'' (f. 25) which was cancelled in proof, is not found in the printer''s manuscript. Several other texts preserved here were not published in 1807: ''The Tinker'' (f. 16b), ''The Orchard Pathway'' (f. 47b) and the prose ''Advertisement'' (f. 47) were withdrawn at proof-stage; while ''Ejaculation at the Grave of Burns'' (f. 53b), ''On seeing some Tourists of the Lakes pass by reading; a practise very common'' (f. 81b), and the sonnets beginning ''There is a trickling water, rather rill'' (f. 24), ''Brook that has been my solace days & weeks'' (f. 31b), ''Beaumont! it was thy wish that I should rear'' (f. 27) and ''Rid of a vexing & a heavy load'' (f. 103) were deleted before despatch. For a full collation of the manuscript with the 1807 published version see J. R. Curtis, Poems, 1800-1807, including "Poems in Two Volumes", by William Wordsworth, Cornell University Press, 1981. Paper. Circ. Jan. 1806-Apr. 1807. The covers from the earlier binding are preserved separately as Additional MS. 47864*. Owned, in 1897, by Thomas Norton Longman, a descendant of Wordsworth''s publisher, and sold by his grandson, Robert G. Longman, at Sotheby''s, 19 June 1934, lot 537. Inserted (f. iii) is a letter from Gordon Graham Wordsworth to Meyerstein, 1935.
