The Bankes Homer, consisting of Iliad 24.127-804 (P. Lond. Lit. 28; TM 60500), with a colophon at the end: Ἰλίαδος Ω. Imperfect, lacking the first 126 lines of Iliad 24 (and possibly also all of Iliad 23). Includes, in the margins, the names of characters to indicate passages of direct speech, as well as abbreviated notes marking narrative sections of text. The breathing marks and accents have in most cases been added by a later hand.

Dimensions: 240x2325mm
Ruling: 16 columns, each measuring 195x105mm and containing between 42 and 44 lines.
Script: Written along the fibres in an uncial hand.
Decoration: The colophon is surrounded by a decorative pattern of lines and arrow-heads.

William John Bankes (1786-1855), traveller and antiquary: purchased the papyrus in Elephantine, Egypt in 1821 (Bankes 1830).
Walter Ralph Bankes (1853-1904): sold the papyrus to the British Museum in 1879.

'Pap. CXIV. THE ILIAD of Homer, Book xxiv., wanting the first 126 lines. Greek. Written in sixteen columns of 7 1/2 in. x 41 in., in uncial characters, perhaps of the second century. Purchased at Elephantine, in Egypt, in 1821, by Mr. William John Bankes, after whom it has been named the "Bankes Homer." See a notice of it by G. C. L. [George Cornewall Lewis] in the Philological Museum, vol. i., Cambridge, 1832, p. 177; and a full description in the Catalogue of Ancient MSS. in the British Museum, pt. i., 1881, p. 6. The roll is mounted in a glazed frame, and measures 7 ft. 7 1/2 in. x 9 1/2 in. Purchased of W. R. Bankes, Esq., in the year 1879'.
