Letter of Agathus to Abinnaeus concerning the Annona (P.Abinn. 26, P.Lond. II 237, TM 10024)
- Scope & Content:
-
A letter to Abinnaeus from Agathus, a military accountant (actuarius), who is being detained in Arsinoe. Agathus asks that a certain Uranius be kept at Dionysias until his return so that he may check the accounts for the collection of the annona. Regulations of the dux as to the annona quotas collected are then provided: the wheat should be kept under lock in the camp and inspection of the quality should be made. In the postscript written from top to bottom of the left margin Agathus asks that a recruit be sent and states that he is being detained on account of gratuities (sportulae). The address is on the back.
