Letter of Thareotes to Abinnaeus (P.Abinn. 31, P.Lond. II 239, TM 10028)

A letter to Abinnaeus from Tharaotes, who recommends his nephew to his attention and mentions that he has dispatched some articles such as quails and fish paste. He also announces a visit in Phamenoth (March), asking that the hempen cords shall be ready so that the huntsmen coming with him will be able to make nets. The address is on the back.

Papyrus sheet, fully preserved although the bottom lacks part of the layer of horizontal fibres. Writing is on both sides along the fibres, the back having a one-line docket. Left and bottom margins are extant, whereas no margin was left at the bottom and right. The papyrus is housed in a glass case.

Script: Rather large cursive hand. Nomen sacrum contracted.

Provenance: Philadelpheia, meris of Herakleides, or Dionysias, meris of Themistos, Arsinoite nome, Egypt. Purchased as part of a lot comprising Papyri 229-255 from the Reverend Chauncey Murch (b. 1856, d. 1907) on 14 January 1893.
