Aurelius Aboul, son of Dionysius, of the village of Hermopolis, petitions Flavius Abinnaeus complaining that eleven of his sheep were secretly shorn at night and accusing a soldier called Paul, who was under Abinnaeus’ command. Paul had named further people as accomplices. In the postscript the same men are accused to have driven off six pigs of Aboul’s on another occasion.

Papyrus sheet, damaged by holes especially in its central portion, and lacking the bottom right edge. Writing is on one side along the fibres. All margins are extant, the right being minimal. The papyrus is mounted on cardboard in a glass case.

Script: Rough cursive hand, similar to that of Papyrus 241.

Provenance: Philadelpheia, meris of Herakleides, or Dionysias, meris of Themistos, Arsinoite nome, Egypt. Purchased as part of a lot comprising Papyri 229-255 from the Reverend Chauncey Murch (b. 1856, d. 1907) on 14 January 1893.
