Letter of Apa Mios to Abinnaeus (P.Abinn. 8, P.Lond. II 243, TM 10065)

A letter to Abinnaeus from Apa Mios, who informs him that he has dispatched some wine and asks that the camel drivers be released immediately, because a festival is on. He also requests to have an ointment ready, should the brethren come to him. A postscript in the left margin contains further greetings to a certain Syrus and his family. The address is on the back.

Papyrus sheet, fully preserved, written on both sides along the fibres, the back having a one-line docket. On the front, one line was written across the fibres from the top of the left margin. The upper margin measures 10 mm; no margin was left at the bottom and right. The surface is slightly defaced in a few places. The papyrus is housed in a glass case.

Materials: Papyrus.
Dimensions: 266 x 105 mm; housed in a glass case measuring 320 x 155 mm.
Script: Large semi-cursive hand, slightly slanting to the right and with a tendency to become smaller and more cursive towards the end of the text. A rougher hand wrote the last two words of the last line on the front for the signature.

Origin: Arsinoite nome, Egypt.
Provenance: Philadelpheia, meris of Herakleides, or Dionysias, meris of Themistos, Arsinoite nome, Egypt. Purchased as part of a lot comprising Papyri 229-255 from the Reverend Chauncey Murch (b. 1856, d. 1907) on 14 January 1893.
