Declaration of Camels (P.Lond. II 309, TM 11688)

A declaration addressed to the strategus Archibius and the royal scribe (basilikos grammateus) of the division of Herakleides in the Arsinoite nome from Stotoetis, son Stotoetis, grandson of Stotoetis, of Soknopaiou Nesos. Stotoetis declares that one of his four camels has died and registers three camels for the current year. With official dockets at the end.

Light-brown papyrus sheet, almost complete but damaged by holes throughout, especially along the right edge and the horizontal folding lines. Writing is on one side along the fibres, the back being blank. The texts consists of one column of 23 lines, with only the last lines somewhat mutilated at the end. The surface is abraded in places and two lines are blotted; bottom, left, and upper margins are extant; the right is minimal and is not fully preserved. The papyrus is mounted on cardboard in a glass case.

Materials: Papyrus.
Dimensions: 196 x 77 mm; housed in a glass case measuring 250 x 130 mm.
Script: Clear cursive hand of medium size, with a tendency to become smaller toward the ends of the lines. Four different hands for the dockets from line 14 to the end, all cursive, more rapid and rougher.
