Repayment of a Loan (P.Lond. II 332, TM 19985)

A receipt from five debtors, Didymus, Tesenouphis, another Tesenouphis, Panephremmis and Pabous, to Serenus alias Claudianus, acknowledging that they have repaid the loan of 1124 drachmas through the bank of Sarapion, in the ‘Treasuries quarter’ (Tameion). Claudianus has no further claims as to the present day. With Claudianus’ subscription at the end.

Light-brown papyrus sheet, complete, slightly damaged at the bottom and upper edges. It bears writing on one side along the fibres, with the back blank. The text is complete and consists of 28 lines. Left, upper and lower margins are extant, with the blank space at the bottom measuring 50 mm. No margin was left at the right. Vertical and horizontal folding lines are visible. The papyrus is mounted on cardboard in a glass case.

Script: Experienced thick, upright cursive hand of small size; second hand in the last two lines for the subscription, in a rough hand, occasionally detached.

Provenance: Arsinoite nome, Egypt. Purchased as part of a lot comprising Papyri 272-400 from Theodor Graf (b. 1840, d. 1903) on 11 April 1893.
