Letter of Iovinus to Abinnaeus (P.Abinn. 10, P.Lond. II 409, TM 10015)

A letter to Abinnaeus from Iovinus, who asks him to intervene with some military officers so that they supply ten artabas of vegetable seed to a certain orphan. The orphan intends to appeal to the dux. The postscript, added in the left margin, contains greetings from Iovinus’ household. The address is on the back.

Light-brown papyrus sheet, fully preserved, with a few wormholes in its lower portion and the surface slightly abraded. Writing runs on both sides along the fibres, the back having a one-line docket. On the front one line was written across the fibres from top to bottom in the left margin. The papyrus is housed in a glass case.

Script: Rather irregular cursive hand, sloping to the right, more compressed towards the end.

Provenance: Philadelpheia, meris of Herakleides, or Dionysias, meris of Themistos, Arsinoite nome, Egypt. Purchased as part of a lot comprising Papyri 401-447 from the Reverend Chauncey Murch (b. 1856, d. 1907) on 15 May 1893.
