Letter of Aetius to Abinnaeus (P.Abinn. 5, P.Lond. II 414, TM 10040)

A letter to Abinnaeus from Aetius, who reports on various matters such as the problems he has had in the collection of contributions. He requests that sacks be dispatched so that he may load the wheat. He then asks Abinnaeus whether he is willing to give barley as a harvest bonus to the workers. On the back there are a postscript and the address.

Papyrus sheet, fully preserved, although defaced in places. Writing runs along the fibres on both sides, the back bearing a postscript and the address. All margins are extant, the right and bottom being minimal. The papyrus is housed in a glass case.

Dimensions: 255 x 78 mm; housed in a glass case measuring 300 x 125 mm.
Script: Thick cursive hand, same as Papyri 241 (P.Abinn. 52), 406 (P.Abinn. 56), 407 (P.Abinn. 53) and a Geneva papyrus published as P.Abinn. 57.

Origin: Hermopolis or Theoxenis, meris of Themistos, Arsinoite nome, Egypt.
Provenance: Philadelpheia, meris of Herakleides, or Dionysias, meris of Themistos, Arsinoite nome, Egypt. Purchased as part of a lot comprising Papyri 401-447 from the Reverend Chauncey Murch (b. 1856, d. 1907) on 15 May 1893.
