Sale of a Donkey (P.Lond. II 466, TM 11749)

Sale of a female donkey for 160 drachmas in Kerkesoucha, bought by Panephremmis, son of Apynchis, from Petosiris, son of Clodius. The date and place are provided at the beginning and are written in a hand different from that of the body of the document. The subscription at the end was written by Mysthes, son of Melas, on behalf of Petosiris, who was illiterate.

Papyrus sheet, fully preserved, with darker spots and slightly damaged along the right edge. Writing runs along the fibres on one side, the back being blank. The text consists of a column of 23 lines. All margins are preserved, the right being minimal. The blank space at the bottom measures 62 mm. The papyrus is mounted on cardboard in a glass case.

Dimensions: 210 x 70 mm; housed in a glass case measuring 255 x 115 mm.
Script: Lines 1-9: Thick, upright hand, detached, with a few ligatured sequences and somewhat irregular; it may be the same as the first hand of Papyrus 313. Lines 9-21: Thin, irregular, rapid cursive hand. Lines 22-23: Subscription: Smaller rapid cursive hand of Mysthes, who also wrote a papyrus in Vienna, SB XVIII 13866.

Provenance: Arsinoite nome, Egypt. Purchased as part of a lot comprising Papyri 465-481 from Bernard Pyne Grenfell (b. 1869, d. 1926) in 1894.
