Papyrus 495(1) and Papyrus 495(2), upper fragment (P.Petr.2 I 25, P.Petr. I 20(2), P.Petr. III 19(c-d), P.Lond. III 495 descr., TM 47315): Will of a man whose name is lost, who makes provisions for his wife Artemidora and to their children. Artemidora is to supply all the necessaries to the children and provide the dowries to their daughters. Papyrus 496 includes two other fragments of this will.

Papyrus fragments of varying size from a register, reused as mummy cartonnage and bearing writing on one side along the fibres, the back being blank. The fragments are mounted on cardboard in two glass frames, named Papyrus 495(1) and Papyrus 495(2).
Papyrus 495(1): Two fragments with portions of one column; the left fragment, made of two smaller fragments, preserves the beginnings of 22 lines; the right fragment bears portions of 13 lines, which are the continuation of lines 8-20 of the left fragment. About 18 letters are missing between the fragments.
Papyrus 495(2): Upper fragment: portion of 19 lines; lines 1-8 are further portions of lines 20-22 of Papyrus 495(2), left fragment. A fragment of Papyrus 496 joins on the left and contains further portions of lines 1-8; another fragment of Papyrus 496 preserves the beginnings of lines 6-11. One sheet-join runs from top to bottom.
Lower fragment: From the foot of a column, with remains of 3 lines; a sheet-join runs from top to bottom along the right edge. The position of this fragment in relation to the others is unknown.

Dimensions: Papyrus 495(1), left fragment: 182 x 78 mm; Papyrus 495(1), right fragment: 100 x 51 mm; Papyrus 495(2), upper fragment: 140 x 167 mm; Papyrus 495(2), lower fragment: 59 x 64 mm. Housed in two glass frames named Papyrus 495(1) and Papyrus 495(2), measuring 225 x 250 mm and 250 x 225 mm respectively.
Script: Careful and regular upright hand, with no ligature, similar to literary hands. Same hand as P.Petr.2 I 24, 26-29.

Origin: Krokodilopolis (Medinet el-Fayum), Egypt.
Provenance: Gurob, meris of Herakleides, Arsinoite nome, Egypt. Presented as part of a lot comprising Papyri 486-603 by Henry Martyn Kennard (b. 1833, d. 1911) in May 1895. The papyri had been extracted from mummy cartonnage found in Gurob by William Matthew Flinders Petrie (b. 1853, d. 1942) in 1889-1890.
