Upper papyrus (A) (P.Petrie Kleon 49, P.Petr. II 4(8), P.Petr. III 42c(1), P.Lond. III 517a descr., TM 7639): Correspondence enclosing a letter of Philoxenus, presumably forwarded to various recipients, concerning stone-cutting works. One hundred and forty stonecutters are not working because they did not receive provisions. Philoxenus asks that 1 artaba of wheat is paid to each of them. A date (27 October 256 BC) occurs in column 1, line 6.

Three papyrus fragments of varying size from mummy cartonnage, written on one side along the fibres and mounted on cardboard in one glass frame.
Upper papyrus (A): portions of two columns; of the first, the ends of 11 lines remain; of the second, 12 lines, with the last word of the last line written after a blank. Intercolumn and lower margin survive. A sheet-join runs across the fibres between the two columns. The back is blank.
Lower left papyrus (B): fragment with plaster residue and some surface damage; portions of 6 lines survive.
Lower right papyrus (C): Small fragment, broken off at all sides, with portions of 6 lines.

Script: A: Careful, professional upright hand, with some serifs; B-C: Upright cursive hands of medium size.

Origin: A: Arsinoite nome, Egypt. B-C: Egypt.
Provenance: Gurob, Egypt. Presented as part of a lot comprising Papyri 486-603 by Henry Martyn Kennard (b. 1833, d. 1911) in May 1895. The papyri had been extracted from mummy cartonnage found in Gurob by William Matthew Flinders Petrie (b. 1853, d. 1942) in 1889-1890.
