Two letters addressed to the engineer Cleon.
Upper papyrus (A) (P.Petrie Kleon 35, P.Petr. II 13(9), P.Petr. III 42b(3), P.Lond. III 538a descr., TM 7636): Letter concerning the opening of a sluice gate, enclosing the copy of a letter sent by a certain Themistus. The name of the sender is lost, the address is on the back.
Lower papyrus (B) (P.Petrie Kleon 38, P.Petr. II 13(10), P.Petr. III 42b(4), P.Lond. III 538b descr., TM 7637): Letter on business matters, with a list of names and figures; the name of the sender is lost. The address is on the back.

Fragments of two papyrus sheets that do not belong together, from mummy cartonnage, bearing writing on both sides; mounted on cardboard in the same glass frame, with two openings showing the text on the back.
Upper papyrus (A): Broken off at the bottom and damaged along the edges; covered with plaster residue; 9 lines written along the fibres on the front, with only few traces of the last; on the back there is one word running along the fibres. Left and upper margins measure c.10 mm.
Lower papyrus (B): Broken off to the right and damaged at the top and left; the original papyrus might have been 320 mm wide, in which case slightly half of the text would be lost. On the front there are 5 lines written across the fibres, with upper, lower and left margins measuring c.15 mm; on the back there is one word running along the fibres, written the other way up in relation to the text on the front.

Origin: Arsinoite nome, Egypt.
Provenance: Gurob, Egypt. Presented as part of a lot comprising Papyri 486-603 by Henry Martyn Kennard (b. 1833, d. 1911) in May 1895. The papyri had been extracted from mummy cartonnages found in Gurob by William Matthew Flinders Petrie (b. 1853, d. 1942) in 1889-1890.
