Conclusion of a letter of the commander Portis and the youths of the unit to Pates, Pachrates and the other soldiers, with reference to the strife against the inhabitans of Hermonthis, the appointment of a prostates of the god Nechtpharaus, and with some instructions. The beginning is preserved in a papyrus at the Pierpont Morgan Library, inventoried as P. Gr. 39, which bears the address on the back as well.

Lower portion of a papyrus sheet, the upper part of which is in New York, at the Pierpont Morgan Library, inventoried as P. Gr. 39; damaged along the folds and bearing writing on one side, the back being blank. There are 11 lines from the foot of a column, the first two mutilated, written along the fibres. Lower and side margins are extant. The Pierpont Morgan Library papyrus preserves the first ten lines of the column, and the address on the back, written with the fibres. The papyrus is mounted on cardboard in a glass frame.

Script: Thin cursive hand, rich in ligatures. Same hand as SB XX 14729 (cf. BL X 231).

Provenance: Pathyris (Gebelein), Pathyrite nome, Egypt. Purchased as part of a lot comprising Papyri 605-650 from Bernard Pyne Grenfell (b. 1869, d. 1926) on 9 November 1895.
