Fragment of a new comedy, perhaps by Menander. A dialogue between a young man and his slave is preserved; the young man intends to break off his engagement with the daughter of an important man, as he is in love with someone else. Once the master has left, the slave ponders on what to do.

Fragment of a papyrus sheet, with holes and some surface damage in the preserved portion; written on one side along the fibres, the back being blank. The front bears remains of two columns, each of 25 lines, for a height of 115 mm. The first column lacks the beginnings of the lines, the second the ends. Upper and lower margins measure 30 mm. Side margins are lost. The number in red refers to the publication in P.Oxy. I. The papyrus is mounted on cardboard in a glass case.

Materials: Papyrus.
Dimensions: 177 x 183 mm; housed in a glass frame measuring 230 x 230 mm.
Script: Good-sized formal round hand, with right- and left- pointing serifs at the end of uprights. Overall bilinear, with exception of few letters projecting above and below the writing lines, such as phi and upsilon at times. With occasional accents, breathings and marks of elision; one high stop to mark pause occurs. Colon marks division of the dialogue.

Origin: Oxyrhynchus, Oxyrhynchite nome, Egypt.
Provenance: Oxyrhynchus, Oxyrhynchite nome, Egypt. Presented as part of a lot comprising Papyri 739-834 by the Egypt Exploration Fund in October 1900. Of these, papyri 739-814 form part of the discoveries made by B. P. Grenfell and A. S. Hunt on the site of the ancient Oxyrhynchus.
