Report of a Lawsuit on the Identification of a Child (P.Oxy. I 37, P.Lond. III 746 descr., Chrest.Mitt. 79, TM 20699)
- Scope & Content:
-
Extract from the official minutes of the strategus Tiberius Claudius Pasion with the report on a court case concerning the identification of a child. Aristocles, advocate of Pesouris, reports that his client had picked up an infant, Heraclas, from the rubbish heap, and had hired Saraeus as a wet-nurse, paying her the wages for two years. Aristocles says that, when Pesouris found out that the child was being starved, he took him away from the Saraeus. The nurse retrieved the child, on the grounds that the child was her own son, while the foundling had died. The strategus states that the child is Saraeus’, and that she may keep him on condition that she returns the money she had received.
