Draft of a proclamation from Dioscorides, logistes (curator) of the Oxyrhynchite nome, with some corrections, concerning a contest of ephebi (youths) taking place the following day: the youths should do their outmost in the performances. Some blank space is followed by the date in a different hand and tachygraphic characters.

An incomplete papyrus sheet written on both sides along the fibres, with only a couple of words on the back, lacking much of its left-hand side. Number 42 in red refers to the publication in P.Oxy. Housed in one glass case. Presumably a draft.

Script: Large and thin upright hand; at the end smaller and more cursive hand, followed by tachygraphic characters.

Origin: Oxyrhynchus, Oxyrhynchite nome, Egypt.
Provenance: Oxyrhynchus, Oxyrhynchite nome, Egypt. Presented as part of a lot comprising Papyri 739-834 by the Egypt Exploration Fund in October 1900. Of these, papyri 739-814 form part of the discoveries made by B. P. Grenfell and A. S. Hunt on the site of the ancient Oxyrhynchus.
